This program is a teacher-collaborative, Principal-led two-year professional development opportunity that uses your existing curriculum and your teaching materials. Because it is fully school-administered, it allows maximum flexibility to meet your needs, is fully sustainable, and is very inexpensive compared with programs that use outside support. It has numerous benefits for District Superintendents and unlike most professional development programs, comes with a limited guarantee.
Participants engage in a process of periodic Principal-led sessions (typically two weeks apart) with work done between sessions.

Literacy Across the Curriculum moves your students from "reading and taking a test" to thinking more broadly about subjects using all language skills in an integrated manner.
Tests are still required, but your students will achieve better results because research has shown over and over that learners in an environment of inquiry and exploration, not one that is just answer-oriented, do better on standard tests.
The ability to integrate all language skills when dealing with new ideas improves the ability to fully think about, understand, and incorporate those ideas.
To ensure that your schools(s) is ready to achieve maximum benefit from this program, consultation is provided (through our partner Kohn Consulting Group) to support readiness for professional development and any necessary coaching during the program.

Keeping it Alive
New initiatives sometimes aren't as effective as they should be because once they're done, the school moves on to the next initiative. That new initiative may or may not be consistent with the earlier work.
Botel Literacy Across the Curriculum is different in three very important ways.
First, it involves the Principal, Teachers, Coaches, Media Specialists, Special-Needs Specialists - even School Board members and parents if so desired - in a totally collaborative approach to teaching/learning reform. Your teacher/coaching/specialist team will become more comfortable working together and as a result will be more able to sustain the momentum achieved in the sessions.
Second, because this program uses your curriculum and teaching materials, it isn't affected by changes in them.
Third, once you buy the program, it's yours to use over and over again, for example with new teachers. Also, you will benefit from ongoing improvements, upgrades and additions to program materials.
Need More Support?
While the Literacy Across the Curriculum professional development program is designed to provide all the resources a school needs for a comprehensive two-year program, some schools may be interested in additional support, such as program kick-off, 2nd-year assistance, or supplementary professional input.
Botel-Wickman Professional Development Associates partners with Kohn Consulting Group, specialists with long experience in working with Dr. Botel and the Literacy Across the Curriculum model. Contact us to discuss how additional support could be used in your program.
